Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes have suffered a major setback after star striker, Victor Osimhen was ruled out of Tuesday’s decisive clash against South Africa in Bloemfontein.
The Galatasaray forward, sustained a knock during Saturday’s tense 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo.
He was forced off in the first half following a heavy challenge by Claude Niyomugabo and did not return.
On Sunday, Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed that the striker will not travel with the team. According to the update, the team doctor diagnosed Osimhen with a chin bruise that left him in discomfort overnight.
Coach Eric Chelle, who only recently took charge of the team, will now turn to in-form striker Tolu Arokodare, whose goal against Rwanda revived Nigeria’s faint World Cup hopes. Cyriel Dessers, who replaced Osimhen in Uyo, struggled to make an impact, leaving Arokodare as the likeliest option to lead the line in South Africa.
Nigeria sit third in their qualifying group with 10 points, behind leaders South Africa on 16 points and Benin Republic with 11. With only the group winners guaranteed automatic qualification, the Super Eagles must win to keep alive their chances of avoiding a second consecutive World Cup absence.
Osimhen’s absence not only raises fresh concerns over Nigeria’s attacking threat but also underscores the mounting pressure on Chelle, who faces the daunting task of delivering results under difficult circumstances.
