President Volodymyr Zelensky has lashed out at Moscow after Russia’s overnight barrage struck Ukraine’s cabinet of ministers building in Kyiv for the first time since the war began.
Calling the strike a “ruthless crime” and an attempt to prolong the conflict, Zelensky accused President Vladimir Putin of “testing the world” while innocent Ukrainians pay the price.
“Such killings now, at a time when real diplomacy could have started long ago, are a deliberate crime,” the Ukrainian leader said in his Sunday address. “We need the political will of the world to stop these attacks.”
The attack left at least four people dead, including a mother and her baby in Kyiv’s Svyatoshynsky district. Drone and missile strikes also ripped through Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kryvyi Rih, Sumy, and Chernihiv, leaving dozens injured.
For Zelensky, the symbolism of the government complex being hit is clear. The sprawling cabinet building sits at the heart of Ukraine’s political power until now untouched by Russian fire. “It shows Moscow has no interest in peace,” he said.
World leaders echoed his anger. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia for “locking itself into terror,” while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Putin “believes he can act with impunity.”
But despite the outrage, Moscow insists it only targeted military and transport infrastructure, dismissing claims of civilian damage.
Zelensky, however, doubled down, warning that hesitation from Ukraine’s allies only emboldens Putin. “This war won’t end with words. It needs action,” he said, urging America and Europe to deliver stronger security guarantees.
