The Kaduna State Government has issued a weather advisory following forecasts of likely thunderstorms and significant rainfall across the state by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) from Wednesday, Sept. 10 to Monday, Sept. 15.

In a statement released through the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), the government warned of potential flash floods, waterlogging in urban areas, rising river levels, and damage to property, infrastructure, and farmlands.

The Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, said that all the relevant government agencies had been placed on high alert to safeguard lives and property.

“The Kaduna State Government is fully prepared to respond swiftly to any emergencies arising from the forecast. KADSEMA has been directed to work closely with key stakeholders to ensure maximum preparedness,” he said.

Maiyaki urged the residents to take precautionary measures, including clearing drainages, avoiding flood-prone areas, and complying with official safety instructions.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of KADSEMA, Dr Usman Mazadu, highlighted the importance of vigilance, especially during the high-risk days of Wednesday and Thursday.

“We advise the public to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy downpours, refrain from driving through flooded roads, and keep children away from floodwaters,” he said.

Mazadu also urged farmers to secure their crops and storage facilities, warning that agricultural losses could be significant if proper steps are not taken.

He added that emergency response teams across the state had been activated and were on standby to provide rapid assistance.

“Citizens are encouraged to report any flash flood incidents or emergencies through KADSEMA’s emergency hotlines,” he stated.

The government urged the residents to remain calm but on alert and called for community cooperation in reducing the risks associated with the anticipated severe weather conditions.(NAN(www.nannews.ng)
