An unspecified number of police operatives attached to the Oba Market Area Command in Benin City, Edo State, have been arrested and detained for alleged extortion.
The Spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, CSP Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday. He revealed that the Command had recovered the sum of ₦300,000, which was allegedly extorted from a furniture maker by the detained officers.
According to him, the recovery of the money followed the circulation of a video on social media by an influencer, who alleged the extortion.
He said, “The officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the said officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures in accordance with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
“In addition, stern administrative measures have been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to ensure professionalism, discipline, and respect for the rights of citizens in the discharge of their duties,” the statement said.
The statement further encouraged members of the public to report any unprofessional conduct by officers and men of the Command to the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB) or the Complaints Response Unit (CRU) via the following dedicated telephone numbers:  0815 099 9335, 0810 038 9992.
“The Command assures the good people of Edo State that it remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and accountability in service delivery,” the statement added.
