The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspected kingpin of a notorious gang that disguised as security operatives to gain entry into residential estates across the metropolis.
The syndicate, according to police, specialized in wearing fake uniforms and moving around with a modified Mercedes-Benz car jack crafted to look like a firearm to deceive unsuspecting estate security personnel.
Once inside, the gang allegedly targeted high-end vehicles including Toyota Hilux, Toyota Highlander, Lexus 650, Mercedes-Benz and other SUVs, vandalizing them and removing expensive parts such as brainboxes, tapping glasses, wiring systems, side mirrors, and control devices.
Police spokesperson, DSP Babasuyi Oluseyi, confirmed on Saturday that the arrested suspect has confessed and is cooperating with detectives, while efforts are underway to apprehend other gang members.
Recovered items include a Mercedes-Benz car jack and a face cap boldly inscribed Special Force, which the suspect allegedly used to impersonate operatives.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has urged Lagos residents, estate managers, and security guards to exercise caution and verify anyone claiming to be a security operative before granting access.
“In addition to basic verification, residents are urged to collaborate closely with the Police by contacting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) covering their area to confirm the authenticity of such persons. Where there is doubt, they should be referred to the nearest police division,” the statement read.
