A fatal accident occurred on Monday at Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora 7Up, Lagos, when a 40-foot container truck overturned and landed on a commercial tricycle, killing two passengers, including a serving police officer.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the truck, with registration number XP 368 AKD, lost control while attempting to navigate beneath the Ijora Bridge and toppled onto the tricycle (KJA 364 QN) carrying passengers.
The police officer died on the spot in the accident, and his remains were taken to a morgue in Yaba. The second victim, a female passenger, was retrieved from the wreckage by her grieving relatives.
LASTMA officials, working alongside other emergency responders, rescued two additional victims alive, including the tricycle operator, during the accident, though both suffered multiple leg fractures.
They were quickly transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to Jimsan Hospital, Ijora, for urgent treatment.
The scene grew tense as angry residents attempted to set the truck ablaze. Security personnel from Badia, Trinity, and Kirikiri Police Divisions swiftly moved in, cordoning off the area to prevent mob action and ensure smooth rescue operations.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families, describing the tragedy as “deeply grievous and most regrettable.”
He also prayed for the recovery of the injured victims and commended the swift response of emergency teams, whose intervention, he said, prevented further casualties.
Bakare-Oki urged truck and articulated vehicle drivers to exercise extreme caution, particularly along busy corridors and under bridges, warning that reckless driving continues to pose grave risks to commuters across Lagos.
