A voice of calm and faith: Chukwuemeka’s new gospel album

By Chinonso Ihekire

“His Yoke My Rest” is a gospel album with a soul and style that reach far beyond the boundaries of genre. Released late last year, the music is open, inviting, and deeply human.

The lyrics carry faith without losing their relatability, offering moments of calm, authenticity, and quiet strength.

The vocals are warm and assured, but what truly stands out is the artistry of the musical choices.

In “Keep Me Lord”, the sparse pairing of live piano and cello with the voices of Chukwuemeka and Sinmidele creates a delicate intimacy.

By contrast, “Rain Is Coming” builds slowly on synth pads, rising with anticipation before Bardkay’s crisp rap breaks through like the downpour itself. On tracks like Come Within and Broken, the chants add both rawness and depth, pulling the listener into a space of reflection.

In “Come Within”, Chukwuemeka sings: “you built the trust before the dive, but still my feet were shaking, I cling to what I know of you, your word – I believe.” It feels like a gentle conversation within the heart of someone on the edge of faith’s leap. Lines like this capture the album’s core: honesty, fragility, and courage held together by trust in God.

What becomes clear throughout this project is that Chukwuemeka is not only richly trained in music but also deeply aware of music’s greater purpose—to move, to speak, to connect.

“His Yoke My Rest” is more than a collection of songs; it is a thoughtful work of art that lingers long after the last note. If this album is any indication, Chukwuemeka is a gospel voice to watch for years to come.
