Across Africa, a new wave of finance professionals is reshaping the insurance landscape. From Nigeria to Kenya and Ghana, five standout leaders are driving change through innovation in investment strategy, actuarial science, and digital transformation. With experience ranging from global capital markets to regional operations, these professionals are raising technical standards, strengthening solvency, and expanding financial inclusion.

Isaac Mills – Architect of Liability-Driven Investing in West Africa

A finance expert Isaac Mills has led the adoption of liability-driven investment (LDI) strategies tailored to African insurers. As Investment Manager at American International Insurance Company in Ghana, Mills oversaw a multi-asset portfolio, delivering investment income and improving solvency ratios. His LDI framework addressed currency volatility and inflation challenges unique to West Africa.

Previously, Mills advised financial institutions at Ernst & Young and led the investment leg of Nigeria’s largest annuity acquisition. Now at American International Insurance Company, he focuses on infrastructure deals while remaining engaged in African insurance reform through speaking engagements and thought leadership.

Ngozi Ola-Israel – Financial and Digital Leader at AXA Mansard

As CFO, and former Chief Data Officer, at AXA Mansard, Ngozi Ola-Israel combines financial expertise with digital innovation. Under her leadership, AXA Mansard surpassed 2022 revenue targets by 32%, and its share price rose nearly 50%. A PwC alumna and trained engineer, she led the insurer’s complex IFRS 17 transition and embedded data analytics into financial decision-making.
Her digital initiatives include real-time performance dashboards, AI-based car valuation models, and fraud reduction tools. Beyond AXA, she mentors women executives through WIMBIZ and sits on the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council, advocating for gender equity and ESG integration in insurance finance.

Wycliffe Obutu – Building Nigeria’s Actuarial Capacity

Kenyan-born actuary Wycliffe Obutu is transforming actuarial practice in Nigeria. As Chief Actuary at AIICO Insurance, he leads the country’s largest actuarial team and secured the UK’s IFoA Quality Assurance accreditation, Nigeria’s first and a rare global milestone. This elevated AIICO’s credibility with reinsurers and regulators.

Obutu’s Pan-African experience spans six countries through his work at UAP-Old Mutual and Ernst & Young. At AIICO, he leads actuarial valuation, reinsurance optimization, and product pricing, all while mentoring young actuaries to reduce the continent’s actuarial talent gap.

Charles Njuguna – Leading Britam’s Financial Turnaround

Since becoming Group Finance Director of Britam Holdings in 2021, Charles Njuguna has led one of East Africa’s most successful insurance recoveries. Britam’s pre-tax profit surged to KSh 2.38 billion by mid-2023, up from KSh 376 million in 2021. Gross earned premiums and insurance service revenue also rose by over 30%.

Njuguna’s 20-year career spans banking and insurance, including roles at Old Mutual, GT Bank, and Faulu Microfinance Bank. His IFRS 17 implementation across Britam’s seven-country footprint demonstrates his skill in balancing compliance with performance. He also serves as a Non-Executive Director at HF Group, broadening his impact across Kenya’s financial ecosystem.

Ezekiel Mburu – Innovating at the Intersection of Actuarial Science and Insurtech

Ezekiel Macharia Mburu, CEO of Kenbright Holdings, blends actuarial precision with entrepreneurial flair. A Fellow of the UK’s actuarial institute, he has built an East African financial services group offering actuarial, pension, insurance, and health solutions.

Mburu launched insurtech products like Digger Motors (a motor insurance comparison platform) and ShariaCare (Sharia-compliant health insurance). He’s also pioneered actuarial AI tools for risk assessment. A mentor and thought leader, Mburu co-founded the Actuarial Academy of East Africa and regularly speaks on insurance innovation and financial inclusion.

Charting the Future of Insurance Finance in Africa

These five professionals represent a broader shift toward technical excellence and innovation in African insurance. Their work spans risk-based regulation, digital transformation, actuarial standard-setting, and the return of diaspora talent to African markets. Collectively, they manage or influence billions in insurance and pension assets, shaping policyholder outcomes and long-term sector resilience.
As regulators tighten solvency rules and insurance penetration slowly rises, leaders like Mills, Ola-Israel, Obutu, Njuguna, and Mburu are redefining what’s possible. Their combined expertise is not just transforming firms, it’s laying the foundation for an African insurance sector that sets global benchmarks, attracts capital, and delivers inclusive protection for the next generation.
