The aircraft carrying U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth made an emergency landing in the United Kingdom after a crack was detected in the plane’s windshield during its return flight from NATO’s Defence Ministers Meeting, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The incident, disclosed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Sean Parnell (@SeanParnellASW), revealed that the unscheduled landing was conducted “based on standard procedures” after flight personnel detected the crack midair.

“On the way back to the United States from NATO’s Defense Ministers meeting, Secretary of War Hegseth’s plane made an unscheduled landing in the United Kingdom due to a crack in the aircraft windshield,” Parnell stated.

“The plane landed based on standard procedures and everyone onboard, including Secretary Hegseth, is safe.”

Sources close to the Pentagon described the landing as a precautionary measure, emphasising that such responses are routine when aircraft safety concerns arise.

Before the emergency landing, Hegseth had reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities, announcing that “firepower” is on its way through European allies’ purchases of American-made weapons.

Speaking in Brussels on the sidelines of the NATO Defence Ministers’ meeting, Hegseth said European commitments to Ukraine would soon be translated into tangible battlefield capabilities.

“Firepower that’s what is coming,” Hegseth declared, echoing remarks by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. “The commitments made by our European partners are being turned into capabilities for Ukraine.”

According to the CNN, the weapons transfers are part of the new Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, a framework enabling European nations to procure US military equipment for Ukraine. So far, pledges under the programme have reached $2 billion, with further commitments expected from NATO member states.

While Kyiv is hoping to acquire long-range Tomahawk missiles through the initiative, the final decision on approving such sales lies with US President Donald Trump.

The PURL framework, unveiled earlier this year, is designed to accelerate the delivery of advanced weapons systems and reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks in transatlantic defence cooperation, a move seen as vital to sustaining Ukraine’s resistance amid intensifying Russian offensives.
