Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, marked his 66th birthday in a touching way by hosting 7,000 widows at the State Library Complex in Calabar.
The event was filled with gratitude and appreciation for his support toward vulnerable groups, especially widows.
Speaking at the celebration, Governor Otu praised women for their vital roles in society.
He said that without their support, he and his team would not have made it to the Government House.
The governor also warned people who exploit widows in markets, promising to create a system where widows can report such cases.
He vowed to ensure that anyone extorting money from widows returns what they have taken.
The leader of widows in the state, Mrs. Uduak Spencer, thanked the governor for his care and compassion, noting that few leaders remember widows.
Another widow, Mrs. Felicia Eyaba, expressed her joy, saying, “Widows are often forgotten, but you chose to celebrate with us. You have done well.”
