The coalition reminded Nigerians of the violence allegedly carried out by IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in the South-East, noting that many civilians and security personnel have lost their lives in attacks linked to the group.

A coalition of civil society and self-determination groups, operating under the banner of the Coalition for Good Governance (CGG), has condemned attempts by what it described as “desperate politicians and subversive elements” to politicise the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a strongly worded statement jointly signed by its conveners, including Nelson Ekujumi, Razaq Olokoba, Razaq Oladosu, Ajayi Popoola, Uche Nnadozie, and Shola Justice Omolola, the group described such moves as “irresponsible, inciting and satanic.”

According to the coalition, certain failed politicians and self-styled activists, rejected repeatedly at the polls, are now “masquerading as freedom fighters” in an attempt to manipulate public sentiment and undermine the rule of law.

“Mr. Nnamdi Kanu is facing terrorism charges before a competent court, which has directed him to open his defence after the prosecution concluded its case,” the group stated.

“Rather than respecting the judicial process, these subversive elements are attempting to incite Nigerians against lawful authority, which is both dangerous and unacceptable.”

The coalition reminded Nigerians of the violence allegedly carried out by IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in the South-East, noting that many civilians and security personnel have lost their lives in attacks linked to the group.

“Despite IPOB’s violent activities, the Nigerian government has continued to uphold the rule of law by allowing Kanu to defend himself in court, rather than resorting to extrajudicial means,” the statement added.

While commending the Federal Government for adhering to due process, CGG urged it not to bow to pressure or blackmail to discontinue Kanu’s trial, warning that doing so would dishonour the memory of innocent Nigerians killed in IPOB-related violence.

The group further cautioned citizens against participating in any protest or rally linked to Kanu’s case, describing such gatherings as “mischievous and fraudulent” attempts to destabilise the country.

“We will not fold our arms while anti-democratic elements incite chaos under the guise of activism. Nigerians must stay alert, uphold democratic values, and reject manipulation by failed politicians pursuing selfish agendas,” the coalition declared.

It reaffirmed its support for democracy and the rule of law, urging Nigerians to resist becoming “pawns in the political chess game of opportunists who thrive on disorder.”

“God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
