Ogun doctors vow to battle quacks

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun branch says it will not relent in its war against quackery and other infractions in the medical practice in the state.

Chairman of the association, Dr Opeoluwa Ogunjimi stated this on Thursday at a news conference as part of activities marking its 2025 Physicians’ Week in Abeokuta.

Ogunjimi explained that the association had mapped out strategies to rejuvenate its monitoring committee for quackery.
He emphasised that the state government also has a crucial role in combating the menace by providing maximum support to NMA.

“Quackery is as old as the profession and if the government can help us, we want to rejuvenate the monitoring committee for quackery.

“The community is also needed in this regard. There is need for community leaders to be on the look out and report suspected fake doctors.

“If you are not a doctor, don’t attempt to practice as a doctor and if we as a community notice somebody that is not a doctor practicing as a doctor, you can alert the government or alert NMA and action will be taken,” he said.

Ogunjimi also called on the federal government to improve on the renumeration packages for doctors, tackle economic challenges and provide adequate security.

He stated that the weeklong celebration aimed to reflect on both the challenges facing the medical profession and its notable achievements.
According to him, this years’ physician week themed “Healthcare as a Value Chain: Building Efficiency from Policy to Patient”, underscores the critical role physicians play in the healthcare value chain.

“We reflect not only on the challenges facing the medical profession but also on the collective achievements that continue to inspire hope within the state and Nigeria at large.

“It emphasises the need for efficient healthcare systems, from policy formulation to patient care, and recognises physicians’ contributions to achieving this goal,” he said.
