Newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), officially assumed duty on Thursday, arriving at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja at exactly 2:30 p.m.
Amupitan’s arrival came shortly after his swearing-in ceremony by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa earlier in the day.
The new INEC boss, who succeeds Professor Mahmood Yakubu, was received by top officials of the Commission and is expected to hold his first meeting with INEC directors immediately.
His assumption of office marks the beginning of a new chapter in the management of Nigeria’s electoral process, following his Senate confirmation on October 16 after a rigorous screening exercise.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos, has pledged to strengthen INEC’s independence, ensure electoral transparency, and restore public confidence in the system.
