Police in mourning as DPO dies during surgery in Lagos

Operatives of Lagos Police Command have been thrown into mourning following the death of their colleague who is also the DPO of FESTAC Division Matilda Ngbanoyen, during surgery for fibroid treatment on Friday.
Ngbanoyen, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) tragically passed away on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m., at the Mayriamville Medical Centre, Bode Thomas in Suru Lere area of the state where she was undergoing the surgery.
Lagos Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi announced the death of DPO Ngbanoyen in a statement on Saturday.
Adebisi described the death of Ngbanoyen as a rude shock.
The Police spokesperson noted that the deceased was a dedicated officer who was never found wanting in her duties
“The Command mourns the loss of a truly upright and dedicated officer who served with unwavering professionalism and integrity.
“Until her passing she was known for her diligence and commitment to duty. Her friendly disposition and humane approach to policing greatly helped to bridge the gap between the Police and the public she dutifully served.
“At no time was she found wanting in the discharge of responsibilities,” Police said in the statement.
She added that Lagos Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh and all officers of the Command had commiserated with the family and the aged mother of the late DPO over the tragic loss.
“The CP has also reached out to the husband and her elder brother who is a priest to extend his heartfelt condolences and support during this difficult time.
“Burial arrangement will be announced later,” the Lagos Police Command said.
