Pressure on the monarchy had intensified in recent weeks after the Mail on Sunday published newly surfaced emails from 2011, apparently contradicting Andrew’s 2019 BBC Newsnight claim that he severed all contact with Epstein after 2010.

King Charles III has formally removed Prince Andrew, Duke of York, from his remaining ceremonial duties and royal privileges, marking the final and most decisive step in his public downfall.

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Thursday, officials confirmed that the 65-year-old royal will no longer use his princely title and will henceforth be known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

The move, palace sources said, followed “a formal process to remove the style, titles, and honours of Prince Andrew” due to “serious lapses in judgement.”

The decision effectively ends a six-year saga surrounding Andrew’s association with the late American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and reignites scrutiny over the royal family’s handling of reputational crises.

As part of the transition, Andrew will vacate his long-time residence, Royal Lodge at Windsor, and relocate to a smaller property on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, privately funded by his elder brother, King Charles III.

Though the Duke has consistently denied allegations that he sexually assaulted Virginia Giuffre when she was a teenager, the palace said the decision was necessary “to preserve the dignity of the Crown and reaffirm solidarity with victims of abuse.”

“These measures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding his continued denial of the allegations,” the statement read.

“Their Majesties’ thoughts and sympathies remain with the victims and survivors of all forms of abuse.”

Pressure on the monarchy had intensified in recent weeks after the Mail on Sunday published newly surfaced emails from 2011, apparently contradicting Andrew’s 2019 BBC Newsnight claim that he severed all contact with Epstein after 2010.

One message allegedly from Andrew read: “Keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!!!!”

The controversy deepened earlier this month with the posthumous publication of Giuffre’s memoir, released after her tragic death earlier in 2025. Her family praised the King’s decision as “a victory for truth and accountability.”

“Virginia never stopped fighting,” her brother, Skye Roberts, and sister-in-law, Amanda, said in a joint statement. “Today, an ordinary American girl brought down a British prince through her courage.”

Andrew, who withdrew from public life in 2019 following his disastrous Newsnight interview, reportedly did not contest the King’s decision. Government officials were consulted ahead of the announcement and expressed full support for the move.

Despite losing his titles and roles, Andrew remains eighth in line to the throne, behind Prince Harry and his children.

The fallout extends to his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, who will vacate Royal Lodge and make separate housing arrangements. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, retain their royal titles under King George V’s 1917 Letters Patent, a “small mercy,” palace insiders noted.

Across political lines, leaders hailed the decision as long overdue. Opposition Leader Kemi Badenoch called it “a difficult but necessary act” reflecting public intolerance of abuse. Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey described it as “a vital step toward restoring public trust,” while SNP’s Stephen Flynn labelled it “the right decision, and an important moment for the victims of Epstein.”
