Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Describing the move as “a most difficult but ultimately necessary decision”, Katung said it was motivated by a desire to deliver more effective representation and service to his constituents.
In a statement dated 31 October 2025, and shared on his X handle, @smkatung, the senator titled his announcement “A New Chapter: A Message of Unity and Purpose.” He explained that his decision followed “extensive consultations with constituents, key stakeholders, family members, friends, and political associates.”
“The past few weeks have been incredibly demanding yet deeply reflective moments in my public life,” Katung noted. “After wide-ranging consultations, I reached the conclusion that joining the ruling All Progressives Congress was a difficult but ultimately necessary step.”
He added that the political realignment was driven by “a sincere commitment to serve our people better and to ensure that our voices are respected at the highest decision-making levels where the destinies of our communities are shaped.”
According to the lawmaker, his move came in response to what he described as “a clarion call from different segments of our constituency,” adding that both President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani had demonstrated “a genuine willingness to collaborate with us towards unprecedented development.”
Katung revealed that he was joined in the defection by Daniel Amos and several members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly. He expressed confidence in the APC’s “developmental record across our senatorial district, which reflects a genuine dedication to inclusion, fairness, and progress.”
“The era of marginalisation and exclusion, particularly in our recent past, is being replaced with purposeful governance and meaningful partnership,” he said. “We are moving forward to ensure that these achievements are not only sustained but replicated across more communities in our zone,” he added.
He appealed to his supporters to remain united despite any political differences and urged understanding from those who may be disappointed by his decision.
The senator reaffirmed his commitment to the people of Kaduna South, pledging to continue working towards “a better future founded on unity, hope, and collective progress.”
“Together, let us remain united in purpose, steadfast in hope, and focused on delivering a brighter future for the people of Kaduna South Senatorial District,” he said.
