TotalEnergies Nigeria’s Senior Drilling Engineer honoured for redefining efficiency, innovation, and leadership in Africa’s energy operations
The lights dimmed, the applause swelled, and the air at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos vibrated with anticipation. It was the closing night of the TechQuest International Conference 2024, a gathering that has become one of Africa’s foremost platforms for celebrating innovation across energy, technology, and engineering.
When the host announced Joshua Umejuru as the winner of the TechQuest Drilling Engineering Innovation Award 2024, the hall erupted in applause. His recognition went beyond personal success; it symbolised what deliberate innovation and discipline can achieve in Africa’s energy industry.
As he stepped up to the stage, Umejuru represented the new face of African engineering ;one built on measurable results, safety, and sustainable innovation.
The TechQuest Drilling Engineering Innovation Award is one of the event’s most prestigious honours. It celebrates professionals whose technical contributions have advanced drilling performance, improved cost efficiency, and strengthened the sustainability of energy operations.
This year, the panel described Joshua’s work as “a model of engineering creativity that turns operational challenges into opportunities for efficiency.”
With over 12 years of experience in the Exploration and Production (E&P) sector, Joshua serves as Senior Drilling Engineer at TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited. His approach to drilling operations blends analytical rigour with real-world insight, producing innovations that have improved both technical execution and project economics.
“Innovation, for me, is about designing solutions that make operations safer, simpler, and smarter,” Joshua said after receiving his award.
Joshua’s journey in the energy industry began with a strong academic foundation. Holding both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Engineering, he entered the oil and gas sector determined to make a tangible difference in how operations were managed and executed.
From his early field assignments to complex offshore campaigns, he built a reputation for attention to detail, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to quality. His steady rise from trainee to senior engineer at TotalEnergies is a reflection of years of consistent performance and technical excellence.
Colleagues describe him as an engineer who “solves problems with patience and precision,” a professional who understands that true innovation in engineering is not about complexity but about clarity and reliability.
Joshua’s award-winning contributions are anchored on practical engineering innovations that delivered measurable results. He authored technical studies identifying over $500 million in potential savings for decommissioning and asset retirement projects across joint venture operations. These studies informed major decisions on resource allocation and project design.
In addition, his offshore development plans have helped shape new drilling campaigns that optimise production while minimising operational risk. His ability to align technical design with cost efficiency has made him a trusted voice in TotalEnergies’ drilling and wells department.
One of his standout achievements is the creation of the Drilling Difficulty Index (DDI) Engineering Toolkit, a practical digital solution that allows engineers to assess well trajectory feasibility, analyse risks, and improve drilling design decisions.
The DDI Toolkit has been praised internally for its simplicity, accuracy, and usability. By reducing analysis time and enabling more consistent technical evaluations, it has become an essential part of well design planning in ongoing operations.
According to one of his colleagues at TotalEnergies, “The DDI Toolkit isn’t just a piece of software; it’s an everyday tool that saves time and prevents mistakes. Joshua built something that genuinely improves how we work.”
Joshua’s leadership extends beyond engineering design. During the COVID-19 pandemic, between 2020 and 2021, he served as Lead Personnel on Board (POB) Coordinator at TotalEnergies EP Nigeria.
At a time when global lockdowns threatened production continuity, he managed the safe daily movement of 300 to 700 personnel across nine quarantine centres. His coordination ensured that every deployment adhered to strict safety and health standards while keeping drilling operations uninterrupted.
Under his watch, TotalEnergies maintained its production targets and avoided major logistical disruptions. His work demonstrated not just technical competence, but also empathy, communication, and organisational foresight.
“Every decision during that period had consequences,” Joshua reflected. “We were dealing with people, families, and the responsibility to keep them safe. It was one of the most defining moments of my career.”
For the TechQuest Awards Jury, the decision to honour Joshua was based on both his technical ingenuity and his leadership under pressure.
Dr. Ifeoma Adeniran, Chair of the 2024 Awards Committee, noted that Joshua’s contributions “represent the bridge between innovation and practicality — the kind of work that keeps industries running efficiently while setting new standards for excellence.”
The panel evaluated hundreds of submissions across multiple engineering and technology categories. Joshua’s entry stood out because it combined measurable impact, data-driven analysis, and scalable innovation that could be replicated beyond his current organisation.
His work embodies the evolving role of engineers in modern Africa — not only as problem-solvers but as strategic thinkers shaping the sustainability and competitiveness of key industries.
“Joshua’s work proves that African engineers are not just maintaining systems; they are designing the future of how those systems function,” said Dr. Adeniran during her closing remarks.
Joshua’s recognition comes at a critical time for Africa’s energy landscape. As the continent transitions toward more efficient, lower-carbon operations, the demand for professionals who can merge innovation with sustainability has never been greater.
In his acceptance remarks, Joshua emphasised that the future of drilling engineering will depend on digital transformation, data analytics, and local innovation. He added, “We must design solutions that reflect our environment and realities. African engineers understand these challenges better than anyone. We should take the lead in solving them.”
His message echoes the purpose of the TechQuest International Conference, which seeks to amplify African innovation and highlight the engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs creating scalable, context-aware solutions.
Since its inception in 2018, the TechQuest International Conference and Awards has established itself as a continental hub for innovation dialogue and recognition. The event brings together policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to share insights on how technology and engineering can accelerate sustainable growth.
Each year, TechQuest honours professionals who demonstrate measurable impact in their fields from renewable energy and AI to infrastructure, health tech, and drilling engineering. Winners are selected not only for technical excellence but also for their contributions to local innovation ecosystems.
Joshua’s 2024 win continues this tradition, reinforcing TechQuest’s commitment to spotlighting excellence that originates from within Africa’s industries.
As the lights dimmed on the 2024 ceremony, organisers announced that nominations for the TechQuest International Conference & Awards 2025 are now open. Next year’s edition will include new categories focusing on Climate Technology, Robotics in Industry, and Energy Transition Strategy, reflecting the evolving nature of Africa’s innovation priorities.
Engineers, researchers, and innovators across the continent are invited to submit their nominations and project summaries via the official TechQuest website.
Joshua’s story is a reminder that innovation is not always born in labs or startups ; sometimes, it begins quietly, within the discipline of an engineer determined to make every process safer, smarter, and more sustainable.
