Shockwaves gripped residents of Sarai Village in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday as the lifeless body of a 96-year old woman (name unknown) was found inside open toilet pit.

The Public Relations Officer of Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement, on Friday.

According to him, the Fire Service Emergency Response Unit received a distress call from one Usman Adamu on Thursday, reporting that an elderly woman had fallen into a toilet pit in Sarai Village.

Abdullahi further stated that: “The Kano State Fire Service, under the leadership of the Director, Sani Anas, received a distress call from Usman Adamu at about 9:27 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, 2025, reporting the tragedy of a woman falling into a toilet pit in Sarai Village, Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the rescue team discovered that the victim had been missing for four days.

“Relatives told officials that the deceased had been suffering from mental illness, and despite several days of searching, her whereabouts remained unknown until she was found in the pit.”

However, the Fire Service team retrieved the victim from the pit, but she was later confirmed dead.

Abdullahi expressed condolences to the family of the dead woman, and urged the public to ensure safety within their surroundings.

Her remains was handed over to the Ward Head of the community, Musa Muhammad, while residents were advised to ensure that open toilet pits are properly covered to prevent future occurrence of such tragic incident.
