Analysts warn Anambra may record another low turnout at polls

The group also highlighted operational and security concerns ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, pointing out that some local councils including Aguata and Ihiala, remain potential flashpoints for violence.
A new report by the Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) has revealed that voter participation in Anambra State has dropped by more than 58 per cent over the past eight years, even as voter registration continues to rise.
Presenting the group’s pre-election findings in Awka on Friday, KDI’s Executive Director, Bukola Idowu, said the figures reflect growing apathy and declining confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
The organisation’s assessment, carried out under its Strengthening Electoral Accountability Project, identified poor logistics, insecurity, and difficult terrain in riverine communities as key factors behind the low turnout.
KDI noted that Anambra North Senatorial District, despite having the highest number of registered voters, consistently records the lowest participation rates. Local councils such as Anambra East, Anambra West and Ogbaru were found to be particularly affected due to accessibility challenges and voter fatigue.
The group also highlighted operational and security concerns ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, pointing out that some local councils including Aguata and Ihiala, remain potential flashpoints for violence.
While commending INEC’s preparation, Idowu urged the electoral body and security agencies to ensure timely deployment of staff and materials, as well as visible but non-threatening policing.
KDI encouraged voters to turn out peacefully, stressing that credible elections depend on transparency, coordination, and restraint by political actors.
