…As Jeep Wrangler, Cherokee Cruise Coastline
The initial acclaim was almost universal as motoring journalists wandered among a variety of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, brand of vehicles at the MB Automobile Centre, at Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria at a media briefing and test drive of these vehicles as they poked, prodded and peered into the remarkable Jeep Wrangler.
That it is remarkable, there is no doubt, that it is well built, spacious and comfortable. Its excellent 3.8litre V6 engine and incredible slick gearbox are beyond dispute, but whether the Wrangler will sell in the numbers Kingsley Uwatse, Deputy Sales Manager, Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge is hoping for – well, only time will tell.
Well listen this time: Jeep Wrangler is super. Get out of the groove and go for something completely different. Even Mr Chidi Ugwu from The Champion Newspaper, my frequent driving partner, couldn’t find anything to grinch about in the car and we agreed that, if we had N7.7million for now and a need for a new off-road, the wrangler would be way up on our list; well listen this time, Jeep Wrangler is super.
The test drive which took place along Lekki-Epe Expressway and Elegushi Beach, Lagos saw the Jeeps displaying both their on-and off-road capabilities. The test drive marks the official introduction of the Jeep brand into Nigeria. The Wrangler is a car that handles very well, with round good visibility.
Driving the Wrangler is fairly enjoyable. The chassis is light. It feels sporty in situations such as quick turns. Anyway, Christoph Heckhausen, General Manager, M-B Automobile Services Limited, plainly loves the Wrangler. “Never before has Jeep made such a bold move†he said. “The Wrangler defies convention and offers a world of possibilities for the young at heart and people with a sense of adventure.â€
The Jeep models proved to be at home on the sandy beach and the Lekki-Epe Highway. The Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler, which took to the sandy beach during the test drive, made driving so exciting. The Jeep models have never been as good as the current models. The Grand Cherokee which is the flagship of the family is available in 5.7 V8 and 3.6 V6 engines while, the Jeep Wrangler is available in 3.8 V6 litre engine. The Compass and Patriot are powered by 2.0 litre engines. All the Jeep models are available in automatic transmission and leather seats.
