A sudden blast near a commercial bank in Owo, Ondo State, caused widespread alarm on Saturday, sending residents and motorists scrambling for safety.
The loud detonation, which occurred close to the busy bank premises, prompted traders to abandon their stalls as smoke briefly drifted above the area.
The incident sparked heightened concern in the community, coming less than a fortnight after the Department of State Services warned of possible coordinated attacks by suspected ISWAP members in parts of Ondo and Kogi states.
However, the Ondo State Police Command later dispelled fears of a terrorist attack. The Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, explained that officers who responded to the scene discovered that the noise resulted from a powerful firecracker.
According to him, a man identified as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu was taken into custody after allegedly admitting to purchasing the device from a nearby supermarket. Police say a second suspect, believed to have ignited the explosive, is still being sought.
“The disruption was caused by a banger bought from a shop close to the area. We have arrested one Ayoola Daniel Ojumu, who has confessed to his involvement,” Ayanlade said.
He added that the suspect would be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.
The command appealed to parents and guardians to warn their children ahead of the festive period, stressing that law enforcement officers would take firm action against anyone found endangering public peace. Ayanlade also encouraged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activity promptly.
