The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a strongly worded condemnation of the newly declared factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, describing his call for foreign intervention in Nigeria as “reckless, unpatriotic and a dangerous assault on national sovereignty.”
Turaki, who was pronounced National Chairman by a faction of the crisis-ridden PDP barely three days ago, had urged foreign governments to intervene in Nigeria to stop what he alleged was “Christian genocide” and to “protect democracy.”
But in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, the APC said the remark was irresponsible and exposed Turaki’s desperation.
According to the ruling party, Turaki’s comments reflected poor judgement and an alarming lack of capacity to manage even his party’s internal turmoil.
“For a man declared National Chairman barely 72 hours ago by a faction of his deeply fractured party, Turaki looked and sounded desperate, at his wit’s end, confused, incoherent, and grossly lacking in stamina and capacity to manage his party’s crisis,” the APC said.
The party argued that Nigerians had expected Turaki’s first task to be unifying the PDP’s warring blocs and restoring internal cohesion, not seeking foreign interference.
“Instead, Turaki’s first official act as factional chairman was his call for foreign invasion of Nigeria as a solution to the self-inflicted internal crisis of his PDP. That is as shameless as it is a dangerous threat to national security and sovereignty,” the statement added.
The APC also reminded Nigerians that during the PDP’s 16-year rule, despite what it described as the party’s “ruthless subversion of opposition,” no faction ever contemplated inviting foreign powers to resolve domestic political disputes.
“Turaki’s call is not only an admission of the party’s incapacity to manage its internal contradictions, it must be taken as a final certification of the PDP’s demise,” the ruling party declared.
The APC urged the international community to disregard what it described as a disgraceful plea.
“We trust the international community to dismiss the PDP’s disgraceful and unpatriotic call as a pitiful distraction from the failure of its internal democracy and embarrassing disintegration,” the party said.
It added that “the heightened desperation of the PDP and other opposition leaders is now clear for all to see,” warning that Turaki’s remarks show “how far they are willing to go, even to the extent of actively seeking destructive intervention of foreign powers on Nigerian soil in order to serve their sinister political agenda.”
The ruling party called on Nigerians to remain resolute in support of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“We urge Nigerians to stand firm in support of our great Party, and the visionary leadership of President Bola Tinubu as we continue the arduous task of building progress and prosperity in all areas of our national life,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Felix Morka, National Publicity Secretary of the APC.
