Carlots.ng, a rising player in Nigeria’s automotive technology space, today announced the public launch of its advanced Car Import Duty Calculator.
The management of the company noted that the portal was launched to solve the confusing and financially daunting process of clearing imported vehicles in Nigeria.
This free web-based tool is designed to empower Nigerians looking to import used passenger vehicles (tokunbo) by providing a realistic, detailed estimate of the total clearing costs before the vehicle ever reaches a Nigerian port.
For decades, prospective car owners and amateur importers have faced “sticker shock” upon their vehicle’s arrival. A common misconception is that Import Duty is calculated based on the purchase price of the car abroad (e.g., the auction invoice). The reality, which often leads to severe budget overruns and stranded vehicles at the ports, is that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) uses its own valuation database to determine the Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) value, upon which a complex stack of tariffs is applied.
Compounding this challenge is the extreme volatility of the Naira-Dollar exchange rate used for customs assessment, and changing government fiscal policies regarding levies on used vehicles.
However, the new Carlots.ng calculator addresses these challenges head-on. It is not just a simple multiplier; it is an educational tool that simulates the actual NCS valuation process.
Key Features of the Calculator:
Realistic Valuation Simulation: The tool explains that duty is based on CIF value, not purchase price, and applies a simulated markup to the user’s input to generate a realistic base for calculation.
Comprehensive Tax Breakdown: Unlike simple estimates, the calculator provides a transparent breakdown of the compounding taxes, showing users exactly how much they are paying for Import Duty (35%), the NAC Levy (estimated at 20% for used cars), VAT (7.5%), Surcharge, and ETLS/CISS fees.
Exchange Rate Volatility Awareness: The tool includes a prominent, adjustable field for the current Customs Exchange Rate, educating users on how daily CBN fluctuations drastically impact final clearing costs.
Age Limit Detection: It automatically flags vehicles older than 12 years, warning users that such imports are generally prohibited and subject to seizure under current regulations.
Speaking on the launch, a spokesperson for Carlots.ng stated, “We recognized that the biggest barrier to entry for many Nigerians wanting to import cars isn’t just the cost of the car itself, but the fear of the unknown clearing costs in Nigeria. Too many people rely on guesses or outdated information and end up facing bills double what they expected.”
“We built this calculator to bring transparency to an opaque process. While the final figure is always determined by the Customs officer at the port, our tool gives prospective buyers a solid, educated baseline to plan their budgets and avoid financial disaster. We believe an informed buyer is an empowered buyer.”
Carlots.ng emphasised that while the tool is highly sophisticated, it provides estimates intended for planning purposes. The final assessment remains the prerogative of the Nigeria Customs Service at the point of clearance.
The Carlots.ng Car Import Duty Calculator is officially unveiled today and is available for free public use.
Prospective importers and automotive enthusiasts can access the platform immediately.
