The United States, U.S, has condemned the mass abduction of hundreds of schoolchildren and teachers in two separate attacks in Niger and Kebbi States, describing the incidents as unacceptable acts of terror against vulnerable communities.

In a statement issued on X (formerly Twitter) by the Bureau of African Affairs, Washington expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in northern Nigeria, where armed groups continue to target schools with impunity.

“The U.S. condemns the mass abduction of reportedly over 300 students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, Nigeria and the kidnapping, just days before, of 25 schoolgirls from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State,” the bureau said.

The U.S. called for immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice, urging Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens, particularly vulnerable groups and religious communities.

“Those responsible for these crimes must be swiftly captured and held accountable. The Nigerian government must act decisively and do more to protect Christians and ensure Nigerians can live, learn, and practice their religion freely without fear or terror,” the statement added.

The coordinated attacks have renewed concerns about school safety in northern Nigeria, where kidnappings for ransom and targeted assaults on educational institutions have become increasingly frequent.

In Niger State, few days agos, gunmen attacked St. Mary’s Catholic School in the Papiri community of Agwara Local Government Area, reportedly abducting more than 300 students and teachers. Local Christian groups said about 50 students have since escaped, leaving many still held.

In Kebbi State’s Maga town, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area, 25 girls were abducted from the boarding school on or around 17 November 2025. The school’s vice-principal was killed during the armed raid, according to Nigerian authorities.
