Singer Bella Shmurda has revealed that his hit track “Cash App” was inspired by internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys.
Speaking in an interview with Clout Africa, the singer explained that the song was created to motivate those involved in online fraud, saying he wanted to make music that resonated with their struggles and kept them entertained.
Shmurda said the intention behind the hit record was to capture the reality of the group he described as “hustlers,” noting that despite their controversial activities, they also needed music that made them happy.
“It is Yahoo in the sense that they [Yahoo boys] have to dance. These people who are hustling, you have to make them happy,” he said.
The Dagbana Republik artiste added that the inspiration behind the song was not deliberate but something that came naturally.
He said:
“The truth is, when it comes to inspiration, you don’t have any story behind it. It is natural; it just comes. It is God-given.”
Released in 2020 and featuring Zlatan and Lincoln, “Cash App” became an instant hit across Nigeria and several African countries.
