U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Europe could face what he calls “civilisation erasure” if current policies continue. He said the continent may become “unrecognisable in 20 years or less.”
Trump made the remarks in his new national security strategy document, released on Thursday. The paper outlines his America First worldview and criticises European governments over immigration and what he calls weak policies.
According to the document, the U.S. plans to “cultivate resistance to Europe’s current trajectory” and help restore “Western identity.” It said many Europeans want peace in Ukraine, but their governments are “subverting democratic processes.”
The strategy noted Europe’s shrinking share of the global economy and warned that its identity could disappear if nothing changes.
“We want Europe to remain European, regain confidence and drop failed restrictive policies,” the document stated.
Germany quickly responded, dismissing the warning and saying Europe does not need “outside advice.”
Trump also wants the U.S. to shift military focus towards the Americas, revive a modern version of the Monroe Doctrine, and enforce strict border and immigration rules.
On Asia, the strategy still sees China as a major rival, while also urging Japan and South Korea to help protect Taiwan.
The paper paid less attention to the Middle East and Africa, suggesting that U.S. interests there are reducing.
Trump has repeatedly argued that mass migration is dangerous, saying:
“Border security is national security.”
His new strategy signals stronger support for far-right movements across Europe and a push to reduce NATO expansion as he continues to push for a major change in global power dynamics.
