Authorities in Cotonou say investigations are underway to uncover the masterminds behind the failed plot, while regional leaders have commended the swift multinational

Nigeria on Sunday played a crucial role in thwarting an attempted coup in the Republic of Benin, following requests for regional support as mutinous soldiers moved to seize power.

The Nigerian Air Force on Monday confirmed that its personnel were deployed in line with ECOWAS protocols and the mandate guiding the regional standby force.

The coordinated action came after armed mutineers split themselves into two groups one seizing control of the national television station, while another attempted to storm the presidential villa.

However, the group assigned to take over the president’s residence at Marina Palace was overpowered after loyal Beninese soldiers, reinforced by Nigerian forces, regained control of the area.

Amid the tension, the French Embassy in Benin issued a security alert, advising its citizens to remain indoors. The embassy, in a post on X, reported that gunfire was heard around Camp Guezo, located close to the official residence of President Patrice Talon.

“The Nigerian Air Force has operated in the Republic of Benin in line with ECOWAS protocols and the ECOWAS Standby Force mandate,” Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet Ejodame stated, affirming Nigeria’s involvement in restoring order.

Unverified reports later claimed that Nigerian fighter jets launched strikes at the Togbin military base in Cotonou, where some of the mutineers were believed to have regrouped, although these assertions have not been independently confirmed.

The Beninese government has since declared the coup attempt unsuccessful, noting that normalcy has returned and strategic facilities have been secured. Loyal forces also regained control of the national broadcast station earlier seized by rebels.

Authorities in Cotonou say investigations are underway to uncover the masterminds behind the failed plot, while regional leaders have commended the swift multinational response that prevented the overthrow of the government.

Recent reports say that the leader of the Mutineers  Lieutenant  colonel Tigri  Pascal is on the run after the coup was foiled.
