Quick Read

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Mahmud Abubakar Gumi has said that neither the Quran nor the Bible forbids negotiating with terrorists or bandits in Nigeria.

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has spoken out on the recent kidnappings in Nigeria, saying that negotiating with bandits is not prohibited by the Bible or the Quran.

In a BBC interview, Gumi said negotiations are justified if they can help stop bloodshed. He added that even countries like the United States negotiate with outlaws when necessary.

He also reiterated his belief that kidnapping children from schools, while tragic, is a “lesser evil” compared to the killing of soldiers, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue to save lives.

In a separate interview with BBC Hausa, Gumi highlighted the involvement of foreign support in fueling banditry, saying recent insecurity and attacks suggest outside influence. He noted that previously dangerous areas, such as the Abuja-Kaduna highway and parts of Birnin Gwari, have become safer, showing that mediation can yield results.

Gumi clarified that his engagement with armed groups is moral and religious, not a sign of support for criminal acts. He said such efforts are aimed at preventing bloodshed and protecting communities, in line with his religious beliefs.

On broader security approaches, Gumi agreed with Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, retired General CG Musa, that the military must maintain strength, but reiterated that dialogue and negotiation remain legitimate, moral options for ending violence.
