A gas explosion gutted a three-bedroom residential building in Temidere community, Reke, Asa Local Government Area, Kwara State on Sunday, the Kwara State Fire Service has confirmed.

The fire, which started around 4:27 pm, affected all flats in the building. Firefighters rushed to the scene and contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby houses.

According to Hassan Adekunle, Head of Media and Publicity for the Fire Service, preliminary investigations suggest the explosion was caused by a gas leak. “Our officers responded promptly and engaged the fire immediately. The containment operation helped to prevent further escalation and damage,” he said.

The Director of the Fire Service urged residents to handle gas safely, regularly inspect cylinders, hoses, and regulators, and ensure proper ventilation when using gas. He also warned against using faulty or expired equipment and stressed shutting off the gas supply immediately if a leak is suspected.

The Kwara Fire Service reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and assured residents of continued rapid emergency response.
