Akin Lewis opens up on shocking marriage crash

Veteran Nollywood actor Akin Lewis has spoken candidly about the sudden collapse of his first marriage, describing it as one of the most painful experiences of his life and admitting that, years later, he still does not understand why his wife left.

The respected screen legend made the revelation during an interview on the African A-List Podcast, where he reflected on love, loss and longevity in the Nigerian film industry.

Speaking emotionally, Lewis said the breakup deeply shook him and left questions he never found answers to. “I still don’t understand why the woman left till today,” he said, adding that the experience changed how he views relationships and human behaviour.

Despite the heartbreak, the actor noted that he chose not to dwell on the past, explaining that the experience ultimately made him stronger, more focused and more appreciative of his life and career.

During the interview, Lewis also addressed complaints by some film producers about the fees charged by veteran actors in Nollywood. He expressed displeasure at such views, describing them as disrespectful to years of dedication and hard work.

According to him, he has spent over five decades building his career across film and theatre, backed by formal training and continuous learning. He stressed that experienced actors should not be made to feel grateful simply for being cast or pressured to accept less than professional standards.
