“Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.:

The Nigeria Police Force has declared that it will restart nationwide enforcement of the tinted glass permit regulation from 2 January 2026, citing growing security concerns linked to the use of unauthorised tinted vehicle glass.

The announcement was made in a statement  by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin.

The police explained that the decision follows a review of emerging security threats and the need to protect the public, pending the final ruling of a related case currently before the courts. The Force stressed that no court order currently prevents it from implementing the law governing tinted vehicle glass.

Enforcement had previously been paused to ensure transparency and allow motorists ample time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.

“Recent trends, however, reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement said.

The Force added that such vehicles have increasingly been used by criminals to hide their identities while committing offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent acts.

“Some individuals and organised criminal groups have exploited this gap to conceal their identities and facilitate crimes ranging from armed robbery to kidnapping and other violent crimes.

“In view of this, the Nigeria Police Force has found it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities. Consequently, enforcement of Tinted Glass Permit will resume on 2nd January, 2026,” the statement concluded.
