Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has died at the age of 71.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed confirmed the death in a statement on Tuesday, issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado. The statement said Justice Muhammad passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia after a long illness.

The governor described the late jurist’s death as a great loss to Bauchi State, the Nigerian judiciary, and the nation.

He said Justice Muhammad was a distinguished son of Bauchi State, known for his dedication, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law. “He served with distinction at all levels of the judiciary, including the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 to 2022,” the statement read.

Governor Mohammed added that Justice Muhammad was widely respected for his legal knowledge, discipline, and contributions to the growth of Nigeria’s judicial system. He noted that the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) awarded to him reflected his outstanding service to the country.

The governor offered condolences to Justice Muhammad’s family, friends, colleagues, and the people of Bauchi State and Nigeria. He prayed that Allah grant the late jurist eternal peace and comfort those mourning him, adding, “May his legacy of service, wisdom, and integrity endure.”
