Senator Ireti Kingibe officially dumps Labour Party
Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has officially dumped Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), completing her political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Her formal registration took place on Thursday, December 18, at the ADC national headquarters in Wuse, Abuja, in a ceremony attended by senior party officials, candidates for the February 21 FCT area council elections, party supporters.
Kingibe had announced her intention to leave the Labour Party (LP) for the ADC back in July, describing the move as deliberate and one she wanted to execute “with noise and fanfare.”
“I’m totally and completely committed to ADC. But obviously, as the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go collect a card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare,” she had said at the time.
Her media aide, Kennedy Mbele, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the move formally marked Kingibe’s exit from LP and her entry into ADC.
The statement also highlighted that Kingibe’s experience and political profile make her the only serving senator in the vibrant opposition party, describing her as an invaluable asset in any political space.
Kingibe’s defection is seen as a major boost for ADC as the party seeks to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
