Arteta says Arsenal ready to win trophies as he marks 6 years as manager
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says the club is now in the right position to win major trophies as he marks six years in charge of the North London side.
A win away to Everton on Saturday would see Arsenal sit top of the Premier League at Christmas, as they continue their push for a first league title since the 2003/04 season.
Although the FA Cup remains the only major trophy Arteta has won since taking over, the Spanish coach has rebuilt Arsenal into strong title contenders and regular UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
The Gunners failed to finish in the Premier League top four for six straight seasons between 2017 and 2022, but they have ended the last three seasons as runners-up, showing steady progress.
Arteta said the changes at the club go beyond results on the pitch.
“The transformation has been around the club, in terms of the squad, the value, the revenues and the sporting success, even though we haven’t won many major trophies yet,” he said on Friday.
“I think we have been very consistent, and we are in the right place.”
Arsenal currently lead Manchester City by two points, though the title race has tightened after recent draws against Sunderland and Chelsea, and a defeat to Aston Villa.
With a busy festive period ahead, Arsenal will play six matches between December 20 and January 8, putting their squad to the test.
Asked what he wants for Christmas, Arteta was clear.
“Win, win, win, win all the games,” he said.
“That will make everything else fall into place.”
