Gunmen suspected to be criminals have opened fire on police officers manning a checkpoint at Ipele Junction in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, injuring two officers and a female civilian.
The attack occurred while operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol were on duty. According to police sources, about three assailants, riding on a motorcycle, suddenly arrived at the checkpoint and began shooting.
Two police officers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident, while a woman identified as Taiwo was also hit by stray bullets.
Confirming the attack in a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Ondo State, DSP Jimoh Kazeem, said the officers were targeted “while discharging their lawful duties”.
He said the operatives quickly fought back, forcing the attackers to flee.
“All the injured victims were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” Kazeem said.
The police spokesman added that one of the suspects, identified as Nwabali, was arrested at the scene, and the motorcycle used by the assailants was recovered.
“The suspect is presently in custody and has made useful statements that are aiding ongoing efforts to apprehend the fleeing accomplices,” he added.
Kazeem said the suspect would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, C Adebowale Lawal, condemned the attack, describing it as “tragic and reprehensible”. He, however, praised the Safer Highway Patrol team for their courage and swift response, which he said prevented fatalities.
According to the police chief, the incident highlights the impact of ongoing policing reforms and improved operational strategies under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
