Detty December: Lagos to name, shame, sanction hotels, others who cancel bookings for higher offers

The Lagos State Government has warned that hotels, restaurants and event venues that cancel confirmed bookings or raise prices without justification during the ongoing Detty December season will face serious sanctions.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued the warning on Monday during an interview with TVC News, saying the state will no longer tolerate vendors who abandon existing agreements in favour of higher offers.

According to the governor, businesses found guilty of such practices will be publicly named and shamed, while tougher penalties will also be applied.

“This is unacceptable and will not be allowed in Lagos. If a commitment has been made, especially where deposits or agreements exist, it must be honoured,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He warned that cancelling bookings simply because another customer is offering more money damages trust and hurts Lagos’ image as a major tourism and entertainment destination.

“You are spoiling the name and reputation of our city. Not only are we going to name and shame those doing this, the government will also come really hard on them,” the governor added.

Sanwo-Olu said the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, alongside the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has been fully briefed and placed on standby to act against defaulting businesses.

Members of the public who have proof of cancelled bookings, breached agreements or sudden price increases after confirmation have been urged to report such cases. He said complaints will be investigated, and where violations are established, offenders will face the full weight of the law.

The governor disclosed that the state is already aware of some venues engaging in these practices and that discussions have been held to stop a repeat.
