Fresh arrests of beggars as Lagos govt moves to restore order

The Lagos State Government has arrested several beggars for constituting environmental and public nuisance along the Lekki–Epe Expressway and surrounding areas.

The arrests were confirmed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a post on X on Wednesday.

According to Wahab, the enforcement exercise is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to restore order, protect public spaces and ensure a cleaner and safer Lagos.

“Beggars constituting environmental and public nuisance were arrested yesterday along the Lekki–Epe Expressway and other surrounding areas,” Wahab stated.

He said the government would continue to sustain such operations across the state, stressing that no one is above the law.

The commissioner warned that public spaces must not be allowed to deteriorate into areas of disorder, adding that Lagos must remain functional for all residents.

“We will continue to sustain these operations across the state. Lagos must work for everyone, and public spaces cannot be allowed to degenerate into zones of disorder,” he said.

The state government has repeatedly warned against street begging and other activities that pose risks to public safety and the environment, especially on major highways
