He concluded: “Bottom line: Don’t panic. Evidence beats emotion. If they make a claim, ask them: ‘Where is it in the law?’”

Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has sought to allay public fears over the linking of Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) to bank accounts ahead of the January 2026 implementation of new tax rules.

In a post titled “FACT NOT FEAR” on his X handle on Friday, Oyedele dismissed claims that bank accounts would be frozen or automatically debited if not linked to a TIN.

He explained that a Tax ID applies only to income-earning or business accounts, stressing that the policy is meant for identification and data harmonisation, not punishment.

“A Tax ID is required only for income or business accounts,” he said, adding that “this provision has been in place since January 2020.”

Oyedele urged Nigerians to remain calm, noting that personal accounts are not affected by the requirement. He wrote:

“The fear: Your bank account will be frozen without a Tax ID. The fact: Tax ID is only for income or business accounts, not automatic debit or freezing.”

He concluded: “Bottom line: Don’t panic. Evidence beats emotion. If they make a claim, ask them: ‘Where is it in the law?’”

The clarification forms part of ongoing efforts to counter misinformation surrounding the tax reform programme.
