Benin Republic recorded a landmark moment at the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday as they claimed their first-ever victory at the tournament, edging Botswana in a Group D encounter played in Rabat.

The decisive moment came in the first half when defender Yohan Roche found the net to secure Benin’s opening points of the 1xbet AFCON 2025 campaign.

The goal proved enough to separate both sides and seal a historic result for the West Africans.

Roche combined neatly with striker Steve Mounie, who returned to the starting line-up after missing Benin’s opening loss to DR Congo.

The defender then lifted a looping effort from close range that deflected beyond Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, sparking celebrations among the Beninese players and fans.

The victory marked Benin’s first win in their 16th appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, spanning five tournament editions.

Botswana, who had already lost their opening group match, pushed for a response and came agonisingly close to drawing level when Mothusi Johnson curled a well-struck free kick onto the crossbar shortly after the goal.

In the second half, Phoko kept Botswana in contention with a pair of impressive saves, denying Tamimou Ouorou with a strong hand before reacting quickly to smother another effort that deflected off Johnson.

Despite late pressure from Botswana, Benin held firm to secure all three points and boost their hopes of progressing from the group.

Both teams will conclude their Group D fixtures on Tuesday. Benin are set to face tournament favourites Senegal in Tangier, while Botswana will take on DR Congo in Rabat, with qualification still to be decided.

Earlier in the group, Senegal and DR Congo — both on three points — are scheduled to meet later on Saturday in Tangier in what promises to be a key clash for control of Group D.
