Senegal and DR Congo played out a 1-1 draw in a crucial 1xBet AFCON Group D encounter at the Grand Stade de Tanger on Saturday, leaving both teams in strong contention for a place in the last 16.
The match remained cagey in the first half, with few clear-cut chances. DR Congo finally broke the deadlock shortly after the hour mark.
Theo Bongonda’s low effort was parried by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, and veteran striker Cédric Bakambu was quickest to react, slotting the rebound into the net from close range.
Senegal responded promptly, equalising eight minutes later. Substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, making an immediate impact, raced through the Congolese defence and forced a save from goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. The loose ball fell to captain Sadio Mane, who showed composure to tuck the ball past Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the line. The goal marked Mane’s 10th at Afcon in his 24th finals appearance.
The result leaves Senegal top of Group D with four points, ahead of DR Congo on goal difference.
Earlier on Saturday, Benin kept their hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Botswana, placing them third with three points, while Botswana’s elimination was confirmed after failing to register any points.
