Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has commended his players for their energy, discipline and game management after Nigeria secured a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Tunisia to book a place in the Round of 16 at the 1XBet Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.
Nigeria appeared to be cruising after storming into a three-goal advantage and controlling proceedings for much of the contest in Fez. However, a spirited late surge from Tunisia forced the West Africans to withstand heavy pressure in the closing stages.
Despite conceding twice, Chelle’s men remained organised and resilient, refusing to surrender their early dominance as Tunisia pushed for an unlikely comeback.
Ademola Lookman was the standout performer on the night, delivering a Man-of-the-Match display that included a goal and two assists, further highlighting his increasing importance in Nigeria’s attacking setup.
Tunisia’s revival came through a Montassar Talbi header and an Ali Abdi penalty awarded after a VAR review, injecting tension into the encounter, but the Super Eagles held on to seal maximum points.
The result moved Nigeria to six points and the summit of Group C ahead of their final fixture against Uganda, while Tunisia will face Tanzania in Rabat.
Reflecting on the game, Chelle noted that the late scare would serve as a key learning moment for his squad.
“These are the situations that help a team grow. We must learn how to manage games better until the final whistle,” Chelle said.
The coach emphasised that Nigeria’s high-pressing approach played a major role in their dominance for large periods.
“Our identity is based on intensity, aggression without the ball, and speed when we regain possession. For most of the game, the players executed that very well,” he said.
Chelle also applauded his team’s mental resilience after Tunisia scored twice in quick succession.
“It is never easy to respond when momentum shifts, but the players stayed united and disciplined. That mentality is very important in tournament football,” he added.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles boss stressed the importance of maintaining balance between attacking flair and defensive awareness.
“We have quality going forward, but at this level, small details matter. We must remain focused from the first minute to the last,” he said.
Lookman, speaking after the match, said Nigeria’s calm response under pressure showed the squad’s growing maturity.
“We showed character when the game became difficult. These are the moments that define teams in tournaments like this,” he said.
The winger also noted that Nigeria’s attacking cohesion continues to improve with each outing at the tournament.
“We are building strong connections on the pitch. Everyone understands their role, and that makes our play more fluid and dangerous,” Lookman said.
He concluded by praising the technical crew for providing clarity and confidence within the squad.
“The coach gives us belief and clear instructions. When you know exactly what is expected, it becomes easier to express yourself,” he stated.
