A deadly explosion has marred New Year celebrations at the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, after a blast ripped through a popular bar, killing several people and leaving others injured.

Swiss police said the explosion occurred at about 1.30am local time at the Constellation Bar, a well-known nightlife spot in the affluent Alpine resort.

While confirming multiple fatalities, authorities said the precise number of victims had yet to be established. A police spokesman told the BBC: “We can’t say yet how many. Several.”

The cause of the blast remains unclear, with emergency responders continuing to secure the area and assist victims hours after the incident.

Police said a helpline had been opened for relatives and friends seeking information, while investigators work to determine what triggered the explosion.

Crans-Montana, in the canton of Valais in south-western Switzerland, is a high-end ski destination frequented by international visitors, including Britons. The resort, which features about 140 kilometres of ski slopes, is due to host a FIS World Cup speed skiing event later this month.

Valais cantonal authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation progresses, with emergency services still on site.
