Sanwo-Olu rolls out ₦100m support package for Nigerian Legion

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced a major support package for veterans and families of fallen heroes, donating ₦100 million, housing units, vehicles and food items to the Nigerian Legion as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The governor unveiled the donations on Monday during the State Executive Council meeting and the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal at Lagos House, Ikeja.

The package includes four two-bedroom apartments located in Ajara, two pick-up utility vehicles, four cows, 500 bags of rice and other food items for legionnaires across the state.

Sanwo-Olu said the annual Emblem Appeal, held ahead of the January 15 Remembrance Day commemoration, has become an enduring national tradition and a constitutional responsibility to honour those who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He noted that many who survived the nation’s conflicts returned home with life-altering injuries and deserve tangible support beyond ceremonial recognition.

“Our sovereignty as a nation exists because of these brave men and women,” the governor said.

“The Emblem Appeal is our way of saying thank you to those who laid down their lives and to those who returned bearing the scars of service. We must remember them in real and meaningful ways.”

Earlier, the Lagos State Commandant of the Nigerian Legion, Mr Akeem Wolimoh, praised the governor and the state government for what he described as consistent and unmatched support.

He said past interventions had improved the welfare of legionnaires, while empowerment initiatives from various state ministries and agencies had helped dependants acquire skills and livelihoods.

The event drew top state officials and security chiefs, including Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Secretary to the State Government Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, alongside senior officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
