Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua may be done with boxing following the tragic car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest associates.
Joshua’s uncle, Adedamola Joshua, revealed that the 36-year-old boxer has privately informed his family of his decision to step away from the sport in the aftermath of the accident.
Speaking during a visit to the family home in Sagamu, Ogun State, Adedamola said the decision has brought relief to the family, who have long endured emotional strain watching Joshua fight, Punch disclosed.
“He has retired from boxing. That is what he told us, and honestly, we are glad,” he said.
“Any time he entered the ring, we were always emotionally disturbed. Each knockdown felt like our hearts were coming out. The trauma was too much for us.”
According to him, Joshua believes it is time to “leave while the ovation is highest.”
When asked if the boxer personally communicated the decision to the family, the uncle replied simply: “Yes.”
The shocking crash occurred last Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and his team collided with a stationary truck. Two key members of his camp, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele lost their lives in the accident.
Ghami was Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer. Both men had worked with the boxer for years and were considered family.
Joshua survived the crash with minor injuries after being pulled from the wreckage by rescue workers and rushed to hospital.
Following the tragedy, the boxing star has pledged lifelong support to the families of the deceased. He broke his silence on Sunday with an emotional Instagram post showing him with the bereaved families, captioned “My Brother’s Keeper.”
