Super Eagles striker Akor Adams has dedicated his first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) goal to his mother, who was hospitalised ahead of Nigeria’s 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the round-of-16 match on Monday.
Adams opened his goal account at the tournament in the 75th minute, completing Nigeria’s commanding display. The 25-year-old also provided the assist for Ademola Lookman’s opening goal and was involved in the buildup to Victor Osimhen’s strike, which doubled Nigeria’s lead.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Adams said the goal was for his mother, who was meant to be at the stadium but was admitted to hospital earlier in the day.
“Glory to God for scoring my first AFCON goal, like many of you have been waiting for. But the goal is dedicated to my mum,” he said.
“She’s supposed to be here, but she’s in the hospital right now. She was admitted this morning, but she’s much better now.”
The goal takes Adams’ tournament tally to three goals and three assists in eight matches for Nigeria.
