Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued 33 underaged girls from a suspected child trafficking syndicate operating within the state.

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have rescued 33 underaged girls from a suspected child trafficking syndicate operating within the state.

The girls were rescued by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, in what the police described as a major breakthrough in ongoing investigations into cases of kidnapping, abduction, missing children and human trafficking.

During the operation, a 37-year-old woman, identified as Ifeoma Success Anthony, was arrested in connection with the suspected trafficking network.

According to the police, the rescue followed a distress alert received through the Command’s Control Room from relatives of three victims — Divine Mbam (14), Nwagu Favour (15), and Oke Blessing (18), who were allegedly abducted on September 26, 2025, in Ebonyi State and taken to an unknown location.

The victims were later sighted at Emma Pigin Road, Aguleri, in Anambra East Local Government Area, prompting swift police action.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said preliminary investigations revealed that the building where the girls were kept was allegedly being used for child trafficking and prostitution.

Ikenga disclosed that the property is believed to be owned by a 45-year-old woman, Mrs. Ngozi Nnanyelugo, who is currently on the run.

He added that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect, while investigations continue to uncover the full scope of the operation and identify other accomplices.
