“Our position as at today is that we solemnly reject the impeachment process against our governor and his deputy,” the party declared.

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has openly rejected the impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that the move could destabilise the state and damage the party’s image.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the APC spokesperson in Rivers State, Darlington Nwauju, the party said it was alarmed by the “unfortunate developments” emerging from the Rivers State House of Assembly.

While acknowledging that the legislature is an independent arm of government with constitutional powers of checks and balances, the APC said resorting to impeachment at this time was unacceptable.

“Our position as at today is that we solemnly reject the impeachment process against our governor and his deputy,” the party declared.

The APC cautioned against what it described as the resurfacing of internal crises, warning that lingering disputes from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) era must not be imported into the APC.

The party noted that the impeachment threat appears to be linked to budgetary issues, stressing that a valid budget was already approved during the period of emergency rule. According to the APC, a ₦1.485 trillion budget was transmitted by the President to the National Assembly in May 2025 and duly approved by both chambers, with provisions running until August 2026.

The statement added that the constitution allows a governor to operate within a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year, making the impeachment move unnecessary.

The APC further urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government led by Governor Fubara.

“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government in Rivers State is not destabilised through fratricidal disagreements,” the statement said.

The party called for the immediate discontinuation of the impeachment process, warning that it could drag the APC’s image “into the mud” and stall development in the state.

“Let Rivers State remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the APC concluded.
