A fire has damaged the legislative complex of Irepodun Local Government Area in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, destroying the council’s chamber and several offices.
The blaze broke out around 10:01 pm on Friday at the Irepodun Legislative Complex along Olomu Road. Firefighters later brought the situation under control.
In a statement on Saturday, the council’s Public Relations Officer, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, said the inferno affected the legislative chamber and four offices before emergency responders arrived.
He disclosed that an initial assessment by the Kwara State Fire Service linked the incident to a power surge, which sparked electrical fittings and other flammable items.
“The quick intervention of fire service personnel prevented the fire from spreading to other sections of the complex and nearby buildings,” the statement added.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Chief Fire Service Officer Alabi Muhammed, urged public institutions to improve electrical safety, warning that poor wiring and substandard fittings pose serious risks.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and public assets across the state.
