AFCON 2025: Algeria heads to CAF, FIFA after losing to Nigeria
Quick Read
The complaint, announced Monday via the official X handle of Équipe d’Algérie de football, comes after a 2-0 defeat to the Super Eagles on Saturday in Marrakech, Morocco, which ended Algeria’s campaign in the tournament.
The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has lodged formal complaints with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, challenging refereeing decisions in their 1XBET 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinal clash against Nigeria.
The complaint, announced Monday via the official X handle of Équipe d’Algérie de football, comes after a 2-0 defeat to the Super Eagles on Saturday in Marrakech, Morocco, which ended Algeria’s campaign in the tournament.
FAF alleged that several officiating decisions during the match “raised serious questions” and caused widespread dissatisfaction among players, officials, and fans. The federation described the calls as undermining the credibility of African refereeing and tarnishing the image of African football on the international stage.
The complaint included a formal request for an investigation to clarify the disputed decisions and to ensure corrective action in line with CAF and FIFA regulations.
Saturday’s quarterfinal was marked by tension, with post-match scuffles between Algerian players and match officials, as well as an attempted pitch invasion by fans that was quickly contained by stadium security.
CAF confirmed on Monday that it has opened an investigation into alleged misconduct during the game. The governing body said match reports and video evidence have been collected and referred to its Disciplinary Board for review.
In the meantime, FAF urged fans to continue supporting the national team, stressing that the squad is in a rebuilding phase ahead of future competitions, including the 2026 World Cup.
The federation also expressed confidence in the dedication and commitment of players, technical staff, and officials throughout the tournament, pledging to work on lessons learned to strengthen Algerian football.
