The death of Nigerian gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, has continued to stir reactions, as close colleagues who stood by her during her trying period have spoken about her last moments.
Gospel singer Alayo Melody and fellow artiste Lanre Alewilese both shared emotional accounts of the late singer’s final days, while expressing deep appreciation to Nigerians for the love and support shown to her before her death.
Speaking in a video shared via his social media pages on Thursday, January 15, Alayo Melody thanked Nigerians, colleagues, clerics, and well-wishers who stood with Omije Ojumi throughout her prolonged illness.
According to him, weeks before her death, the singer’s condition worsened significantly, leaving her unable to open her eyes or speak.
“But what God has written, no one can change it,” Alayo said in Yoruba, while reflecting on her passing.
He also expressed special gratitude to Prophet Taiwo Ojo and Prophet Sam Ojo, also known as Baba Authority, for their prayers and support during Omije Ojumi’s illness.
Alayo disclosed that the two clerics singlehandedly facilitated plans to fly the late singer to India for medical treatment, including visa applications, ticketing, and treatment arrangements. He revealed that the visa process was attempted three times before it was eventually successful.
However, by the time the visa and documents were ready, doctors reportedly declared Omije Ojumi unfit to travel, as her strength had failed. As a result, she remained in a Lagos hospital, where she later passed away.
Lanre Alewilese, who was said to be with Omije Ojumi throughout the difficult period, also spoke on Thursday about her last moments.
He explained that he refrained from giving updates on her condition because it continued to deteriorate rather than improve.
According to him, a few weeks before her death, Omije Ojumi neither opened her eyes nor spoke, making the situation increasingly heartbreaking.
Recall that the Nigerian gospel music industry was thrown into mourning after Omije Ojumi died on Monday, January 12, at a hospital in Lagos.
